Huskies Split Doubleheader on Thursday

SALISBURY, NC--The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games on Thursday with Catawba College winning the opener 5-1 and dropping the nightcap 3-2.

In game one, Casey Massimini (Downingtown/Downingtown West) went 3-4 and scored two runs, while pitcher Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) allowed just five hits and fanned nine to get the victory. Bloomsburg got on the board in the when Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) hit a two-out double scoring Emily Young (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and Massimini. After Catawba got one run back with a homer in the bottom of the third, the Huskies scored three times in the fifth.

Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) doubled home Young and Massimini to make it 4-1. Mauro would later score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Fisher allowed just two hits over the final three innings to each the win.

In game two, pitcher Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) struck out 11, but Catawba rallied for a 3-2 win. Bloomsburg took a 2-0 lead in the game in the third inning. Mauro hit a sacrifice fly scoring Shen DeBaro (Milton/Milton), while Koch would double home the second run of the inning.

Catawba tied the scored with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, then scored the gamewinner with one out in the seventh inning. Reed and DeBaro both went 2-3 in the game for Bloomsburg.

Bloomsburg, 3-1, will play at Fayetteville State on Friday at 2 p.m. Catawba goes to 7-5 on the year.
